lol, thank you for the passionate response. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot of crap. Just remember it’s who you are that matters, not how others view you. People will always say things about you, no matter if you are the president or a homeless guy. You just have to show them with your actions that you can do much better than those who look down upon you. Being a bigger person than they are and letting little things go can be part of that too!

We are both Asian. Some people might think that we don’t know English or the New Zealand culture, for the past fucking 15years we have been discriminated and judged upon, by racist little cunts, teachers, friends, the lousy McDonald servers. Through Our child hood we have been tortured, physically punished, self esteem lost, been called mean names, being shouted and yelled at, even our god damn teachers asked if we are from this country and if we like it here, we have lived here our whole lives!! And even our grandparents where born here!!! Even tho we are not white, we do not categorise ourselves as rich, arrogant, English impaired ASIANS! We live our lives questioning why we are Asians. After 15years of suffering and brutal punishment we came to the conclusion that we can’t help this is how we are! So back the Fuck off!! Anyway thank you for your time. As a famous poet once said “One Final Fight for us tonight, with knives and pens we made our plight”

Yeah, I’ve heard that before, too. Even elementary school students in China stay up until 1 AM doing homework, copying and writing characters, memorizing long recitations. All to pass the tests to get into good middle schools, where the cycle starts again. With a population of 1.3 billion, I guess competition to get ahead is far more fierce than Westerners will know.

@Steven: well, to tell the truth, most students only study for the super college exam their last year of high school. That’s the “deadly year of cramming.” However, even before that, kids study hard like crazy because their parents make them. In the Asian culture, there are thousands of brands like Kaplan and Kumon that start from the first grade. If you are in middle school in Taiwan, you would be a special one if you didn’t need to go to after-school school from 5PM to 10PM.

I thought Asian students studied so hard was to pass tests to get into college. In China, there’s only enough space for 30% of all graduating high school students. That means there’s 70% bright, eligible grads, but they were beat out by the scores of 30% of their higher-achieving classmates.

So when Asians go abroad, I assume the mindset is still there — i.e. you must succeed in school or you will lose a place in life.
