Gamification Core Drive 7: Unpredictability & Curiosity
Hey guys, I’ve finally released the new episode of the Beginner’s Guide to Gamification. We’re very close to finishing up the 8 Core Drives series. Phew, took some work! Now that I have a great helper to edit and complete the videos, I think we will be improving our momentum of these video releases.
I’m pretty excited, because as you may have noticed, I have been repeating the basic foundational materials on many mediums so far. Many of you may begin to think that this is the only stuff there is in my framework (Don’t forget there are 5 levels!). It’s just that you really need to understand the foundation before moving on to more advanced levels.
During speeches and workshops, most of my audiences don’t have knowledge of Octalysis, so I can’t cover the more advanced stuff in a shorter time-span. The advantage of the Beginner’s Guide to Gamification is that, with 90 Episodes, I can truly dive into the deep and advanced stuff of Octalysis Gamification and teach a lot of things that you wouldn’t be able to learn in a short period of time.
After we finish the 8 Core Drives, I’ll have one episode dedicated to just talking about the course and what we’re looking at ahead.
Then we’ll also cover some other basics such as White Hat vs Black Hat, Right Brain vs Left Brain, possibly the process of good Gamification Design, and then dedicate some episodes in Gamification in the Education Space.
Have fun!
It’s amazing what can be done with simple tools! Just use them well. Well, just use them. Hmmm…EBoth/either work/s.
Great camera work. I am now considering doing some of this type of work for our internal training. What are you using for a camera?
Haha, I just use an iphone 😉
Thanks for the kind words!
This Unpredictability issues a lot in real life also…
Easter Egg and Glowing Choice stuff is cool to understand too =)
Unpredictable things could actually wear white hat? No?
Could it be used (in business) so, like, let’s suppose, we use SalesFroce platform and want to gamify it (all the processes, starting from purchases and up to sales).
When we talk bout activation of this core drive – what do we use?
In a black hat sense, we may add an unpredictable narrative element – that there is an alien invasion going to happen in the nearest 3 months, so please. do more sales! Close more deals so that our company may buy additional weapons to defend against them =)
And then, turn on a white hat unpedictablity and continue this narrative so:
“OMG, it turned out that Aliens are friedly and they want to help Earth citizens develop their quality life, so weapons are not needed anymore, and now we are all going to spend 3 months together to collect resources to built terrans+alien technology center” =)
Unpredictability is black hat because we don’t feel like we are in control. Of course, you can attach is with CD 1, 2, 3 in order to make it more White Hat 🙂
I feel that not all drives are equal in influence on game progress. Yu-kai, what do you think about introducing weights for drives based on some game statistics or, maybe your knowledge?
that reminds me! one time I went to a restaurant and they had typed “French fried”
another was “barely soup” in my freshman year dining hall. i made a joke about it saying it was the dining hall staff tellin’ it like it is
“the united states is very black plum” hahaha that made me laugh out loud
Haha, yes – lots of people laughed at that one 🙂
I once picked up a blackmarket dvd of Lord of the Rings in Chinatown before official release. It was hilarious! The subscripts had nothing to do with the plot. Curiosity kept us going till we realized it was not an alternate plot but random horrible non-translation
Hahaha, funny!
I once got a Chinese translation of a horror movie. In the movie, the guy at the party tells the girl, “I have a really stiff neck. Can you go upstairs and massage it for me?” and the translation in Chinese said, “I’m about to ejaculate, can you go upstairs and rub it out for me?” Haha…
Darkness Reborn, a mobile rpg I’m currently playing, does heavily rely on unpredictability and curiosity. in this game it’s just not possible to buy or forge a desired gear. you buy boxes which contains gear with completely random specs within a given range (the better the rarer). It’s like buying a lottery ticket, exciting but also driving me crazy…
Hey Yu-kai, Didn’t see any GT numbers for this one? I’m curious 😉 Also I couldn’t find a good definition for the secret word, anybody have any suggestions?
Close to mnemonics. Could it be Yu-Kai’s spelling again?
finneycanhelp robpenner Just know your stuff really really well and remember what you said 😉
Yu-kai Chou robpenner I was curious too. No master plan and script? How did you learn to do that? What can I learn to have such a skill?
DR1 But what if those ARE the Droids you have been looking for?
JorisBeerda Haha, thanks for letting everyone know!
Episode 17 on YouTube should you wonder
“The boy is the toy” might be the next “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for”….
Or “There is no spoon” like
robpenner I just know what I’m going to say and say whatever whenever 😉
This video aroused my curiosity on several levels. What was the total time span during which you were travelling and shooting for this video? The continuity in your speaking while jumping between locations is impressive. Did you devise a master plan and script for this video before starting to travel?
achintngm Lol….because they are so curious about my unpredictable actions! 😉
The passerbys’ are surprised more in this one, as compared to the rest of videos..!!
