The car horn outside your window goes off three times before you notice it. Your coffee has gone cold. Your phone buzzed somewhere in the last fifteen minutes, you have no idea when. You look up from the page and the world has the slightly off-kilter quality of a room you walked into without remembering why. The novel did this to you. So did the long-read article you swore you would skim. So did the brand video that you opened on autoplay and watched all the way through.
That state has a name. Richard Gerrig called it being “transported” in 1993. Melanie Green and Timothy Brock turned it into a measurable construct in 2000 and built the most quietly powerful persuasion theory of the last quarter century around it. The trick of Narrative Transportation isn’t that stories are emotional. The trick is that when you are inside a story, the part of your brain that argues back goes quiet, and beliefs slip through doors that would have been bolted shut against a logical pitch.
This is the deep mechanism under every Octalysis storyworld, every brand mission video that actually changed someone’s mind, every behavior-change campaign that worked when a fact sheet would have failed. The deeper you understand it, the harder it becomes to design without it.

What Is Narrative Transportation?
Narrative Transportation is the psychological state of being absorbed into a story to the point where attention to the real world recedes. Green and Brock formalized it in a landmark 2000 paper called “The Role of Transportation in the Persuasiveness of Public Narratives,” published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Their motivating observation was strange and important: people change their beliefs after reading fiction. Not just their mood, not just their willingness to entertain a hypothetical. Their actual beliefs about how the world works. And the depth of the change correlates almost cleanly with how absorbed they got while reading.
The construct is built on Richard Gerrig’s 1993 book Experiencing Narrative Worlds, which described readers as “travelers” leaving the world of origin and arriving in the world of the narrative. Green and Brock took the metaphor and made it operational. They built a 15-item scale called the Transportation Scale that asks readers questions like “I could picture myself in the scene of the events described,” “I was mentally involved in the narrative while reading it,” and “The narrative affected me emotionally.” High scorers on the scale, in study after study, also showed measurably larger shifts in story-consistent beliefs and reduced ability to spot factual errors planted inside the narrative.
That last finding is the one that matters for design. Transportation doesn’t just feel good. It quietly disables the counter-arguing machinery the brain uses to fend off persuasion attempts. The reader who would have rolled their eyes at a brochure says yes to the same idea when it arrives wrapped in a character they cared about.
For a behavioral designer the lesson is direct. If you want to move a belief, a brochure is rarely the right tool. A story with a character whose interiority the reader can occupy is. The reason isn’t that stories are sticky or memorable, though they are. The reason is that the part of the brain that would have argued back wasn’t on duty when the belief came through.
The Three Dimensions of Transportation
Transportation isn’t a single sensation. The original construct has three components that the Transportation Scale measures separately, and a clean reading of which dimension is firing tells you which lever you actually have in design.
Cognitive Attention: The Surroundings Vanish
The first dimension is sheer attentional capture. The reader stops noticing the room, the time, the phone, the pet that wants out. The cognitive system reallocates its working-memory budget toward processing the narrative and quietly defunds peripheral monitoring. People in deep transportation routinely miss spoken questions directed at them in the room, fail to register that the music has stopped, and lose track of how long they’ve been reading.
For design, this dimension is the gating function. If the reader hasn’t reallocated their attention, nothing downstream matters. The cognitive-attention dimension is what every opening paragraph, every cold-open scene, every viral hook on TikTok is fighting for. You cannot transport someone who is still half-aware of the scroll button.
Emotional Engagement: The Body Tracks the Character
The second dimension is the affective payload. Readers transported into a story show physiological mirroring of the character they identify with. Heart rate accelerates during chase sequences, pupil dilation matches the scene’s emotional intensity, skin conductance rises during tension. Functional MRI work by Hsu and colleagues at Freie Universität Berlin in 2014 showed that emotional transportation activates the same neural regions that fire during direct emotional experience, not the regions associated with detached observation.
This is the dimension that converts attention into belief shift. Attention without affect produces a reader who finished the article but didn’t change. Affect without attention produces a reader who liked the tone but doesn’t remember the argument. Both have to fire for transportation to do its job.
Mental Imagery: The Page Disappears
The third dimension is the simulation engine. Transported readers report seeing the world the words describe with something close to perceptual vividness. They report walking through the rooms, hearing the dialogue in distinct voices, smelling the rain. This is the workhorse dimension for persuasion specifically. Imagery turns abstract claims into vivid simulations the brain processes the same way it processes remembered direct experience.
For design, imagery is the dimension you have the most explicit control over. Concrete sensory detail produces imagery. Abstract category language doesn’t. “She walked into the kitchen” produces almost no imagery. “She walked into the kitchen and the smell of burnt coffee was still hanging there from breakfast” produces a sensory simulation in roughly half a second of reading. That difference is the difference between a brochure and a story.
The Transportation-Imagery Model
Green and Brock formalized the role of imagery in 2002 with what they called the Transportation-Imagery Model (TIM). The model makes four specific claims that hold up across two decades of replication work, and each one has a corresponding design lever.
Claim one: belief change requires imagery, not just attention. Studies that gave readers the same story content with versus without vivid sensory detail showed belief shifts only in the high-imagery condition. The attention numbers were similar; the persuasion numbers diverged sharply.
Claim two: artistic craft of the narrative drives imagery. The specific sentence-level moves that produce mental imagery, concrete nouns, specific verbs, sensory adjectives, situated dialogue, second-person interiority, are the same moves that drive transportation. The story does not transport because of its plot. It transports because of how the prose forces the brain to render scenes.
Claim three: prior knowledge moderates the imagery effect. A reader who has imagery resources for the domain (has been in a hospital, has felt fear of a parent, has flown in a small plane) transports faster and deeper. A reader without those resources can still transport, but the imagery has to do more work to build the world from scratch. Healthcare and behavior-change campaigns built on universal-experience material outperform campaigns that require the reader to imagine an unfamiliar context.
Claim four: belief shifts persist after transportation ends. The reader knows the story was fiction. They tell you the story was fiction if asked. And the belief shift persists anyway, often for weeks. The systematic-route audit that would normally clean up post-hoc never quite gets around to the cleanup, partly because the belief now feels like the reader’s own conclusion, not an external imposition.
Those four claims are the entire substrate of every story-driven campaign that has ever worked. They are also the substrate of every story-driven manipulation that should worry us. We will get to both.
What Green and Brock Got Right
Most persuasion theory before 2000 implicitly assumed two channels: a logical channel where arguments are evaluated and a peripheral channel where heuristics like source credibility and message length substitute for argument quality. The dual-process Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty and Cacioppo) had been the dominant frame for almost two decades. Green and Brock did something the dominant frame couldn’t: they identified a third channel that operates on belief through neither argument quality nor heuristic substitution. It operates by changing what the reader actually has access to in working memory.
The brilliance of the framing is that it explains the persuasive power of art without reducing art to either rhetoric or manipulation. A novel changes you not because it argued well and not because it tricked you with peripheral cues. It changes you because for the duration of your reading you lived in a world that had different facts than yours, and the lived experience leaves residue. That is a different mechanism than logical argument or heuristic shortcut. Pre-2000 theory had no clean place to put it. Green and Brock built the clean place.
The second thing they got right is the measurement scale. The Transportation Scale is the rare construct measure that has held up nearly intact for two decades, including in cross-cultural adaptations. Most psychology scales degrade across populations or fail to predict outside the lab. Transportation does both. Studies in education, public health, brand advertising, political messaging, and even courtroom narratives all show the same basic pattern: higher transportation scores predict larger downstream belief shifts in the direction of the story.
The third thing they got right is the persistence finding. Belief shifts from transportation outlast the reading session by a factor that other persuasion modalities cannot match. Logical-argument persuasion decays fast as competing arguments arrive. Peripheral-route persuasion decays even faster as the heuristic cue fades from memory. Transportation-mediated belief shift decays slowly because the reader is no longer experiencing it as persuasion. They experience it as something they figured out themselves while reading.
Where Narrative Transportation Falls Apart
Strong theories earn the right to be criticized at their strong points. Three real critiques have surfaced as the empirical base has thickened.
The Measurement Problem
The Transportation Scale is a self-report instrument. Readers answer questions about how absorbed they felt after the fact. That introduces three known biases. First, demand characteristics: a reader who liked the story scores higher on the scale because they want to report having enjoyed the experience, not because their attention was actually displaced. Second, narrative competence confounds: skilled readers report higher transportation regardless of story quality, because they are better at the cognitive work of imagery and emotional simulation. Third, retroactive coherence: readers reconstruct the experience of being transported as more vivid than it actually was, especially when asked to assess the story positively.
Three workarounds have emerged. Physiological measurement (heart rate variability, pupillometry, skin conductance) gives a real-time signal that bypasses self-report. Behavioral measures (reading time, attention to peripheral probes, willingness to interrupt) capture the cognitive-attention dimension directly. And funnel-question protocols (asking about specific scenes rather than overall experience) reduce retroactive coherence. None of the three are perfect. All three improve on the original self-report scale.
The Cultural Generalizability Question
The original studies and most of the replication work were conducted on US undergraduate samples reading English-language fiction. Two known cross-cultural shifts complicate the universal-mechanism claim. Collectivist-culture readers show stronger transportation effects for stories with group-oriented protagonists and weaker effects for individualist hero narratives, suggesting the identification mechanism that drives transportation is partly culture-bound. Oral-tradition cultures show stronger transportation for stories told aloud than for the same story read silently, suggesting the modality assumption baked into the original scale (silent reading of printed fiction) was narrower than the construct’s name implies.
The construct is real across cultures. The thresholds and the modality-sensitivities differ. A designer building for a global audience should not assume that the imagery-density and pacing that transport a US reader will transport a Korean reader, a Brazilian reader, and a Nigerian reader in the same way. They probably won’t.
The Causality Direction Question
The original studies showed correlation between transportation scores and belief shift. Correlation can run in either direction. Maybe high transportation causes belief shift. Maybe readers who were already predisposed to accept the story’s beliefs are also more likely to report being transported by it. Several causal-design follow-up studies (Green and Donahue, 2009; Bilandzic and Busselle, 2008) have shown that the transportation-to-belief direction holds even when initial belief is controlled. But the reverse direction also exists. Readers who arrive bored or hostile transport less, and the lower transportation produces less belief shift, in a self-reinforcing loop.
The practical implication: transportation is not a magic bullet that overrides hostile audiences. It is a multiplier that works best on readers who are at least neutral. Pre-transportation belief screening (the audience selection a campaign does upstream of the story) determines whether the multiplier helps or hurts.
What’s Really Happening Inside the Brain
The neuroscience of transportation has matured to the point that the construct now has identifiable neural correlates. Reading transported prose recruits the default mode network, the constellation of regions (medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, temporoparietal junction) that fires during mind-wandering, social cognition, and the simulation of other minds. The same regions fire when you watch a movie that engrosses you. They fire when you remember a vivid autobiographical event. They do not fire much when you read a procedural manual or evaluate a logical argument.
The simulation theory of language comprehension, advanced by Rolf Zwaan and others, holds that the brain comprehends language partly by re-running the perceptual and motor experiences the language describes. Reading “she kicked the ball” weakly activates the motor cortex regions used to kick a ball. Reading “the smell of jasmine drifted in” weakly activates olfactory cortex. Transported prose drives this simulation harder because the sensory detail forces a denser re-running.
The counter-arguing collapse has a separable neural signature. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), the region most associated with deliberate logical reasoning and inhibitory control, downregulates during high-transportation reading. This is not a deliberate decision to stop arguing; the brain is simply offline for the argument-generation task because its compute is allocated elsewhere. When the story ends and the dlPFC comes back online, it audits the residue of the experience, but the audit is partial and slow, and the belief has already integrated.
For design that wants to be honest about what it is doing, this is the neural fact that demands the ethical commitment in the next section. Transportation works by temporarily disabling a reader’s argument-generation faculty. That is not a metaphor.
Narrative Transportation vs Other Persuasion Theories
Narrative Transportation sits in a specific position in the persuasion-theory family, and the comparisons are the easiest way to see what is distinctive about it.
vs Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo)
The Elaboration Likelihood Model splits persuasion into a central route (high-effort evaluation of argument quality) and a peripheral route (low-effort reliance on heuristics). Transportation fits neither cleanly. It is not low-effort, because deep transportation is cognitively demanding (working memory is being heavily used to render the story world). And it is not central-route either, because argument quality is not what is being evaluated. Transportation is a third mode of persuasion that ELM’s two-route map doesn’t have a clean slot for. The most generous reading: transportation is a special case of central-route processing where the “argument” is the simulated experience itself rather than a logical proposition. The more accurate reading: transportation is a third channel and the dual-process family of theories has to grow to accommodate it.
vs Heuristic-Systematic Model (Chaiken)
The Heuristic-Systematic Model is the parallel dual-process theory to ELM, with heuristic and systematic processing firing simultaneously and a Sufficiency Principle deciding how much systematic processing the reader bothers to do. Transportation interacts with HSM by suppressing systematic processing during the reading event itself. The reader’s sufficiency threshold for systematic audit is artificially low because the working memory needed to do the audit is occupied. After transportation ends, HSM resumes normal operation, but by then the belief has already shifted and the audit is rescoping a post-acceptance object rather than evaluating a candidate.
vs Identification Theory (Cohen)
Identification, as Jonathan Cohen developed it in 2001, is the process of taking on the perspective and emotions of a specific character. It is close kin to transportation but narrower. You can be transported into a story without identifying with any single character (the omniscient narrator perspective, the ensemble cast). And you can identify strongly with a character in a story that doesn’t transport you (the well-crafted but emotionally distancing literary novel). Identification predicts character-specific belief alignment. Transportation predicts world-level belief alignment. Both can fire together, and when they do, the combined persuasive load is the highest in the empirical literature.
vs Parasocial Interaction (Horton & Wohl)
Parasocial Interaction, dating to a 1956 paper, describes the one-sided sense of relationship the audience develops with media personae (a TV host, a podcast voice, a YouTuber). Transportation is shorter-duration and story-specific; parasocial interaction accumulates across episodes and is person-specific. The two compound powerfully: a transported reader who has a parasocial relationship with the narrator transports faster, deeper, and retains belief shifts longer. The MrBeast model of behavioral influence runs on this compound: parasocial trust built across years of repeated exposure to one persona, paired with transported attention inside each video’s micro-narrative.
Narrative Transportation in the Real World
The construct is most visible where it is deliberately deployed and most consequential where it is deployed without awareness.
Health Behavior Campaigns
The Centers for Disease Control’s Tips From Former Smokers campaign is the cleanest documented case of narrative transportation in modern public health. Each ad features a specific former smoker (Terrie, Brian, Bill, Rose) telling their personal story with their actual scars and prosthetics visible. The campaign measured roughly a 12% relative increase in quit attempts during its first three months. Statistical fact sheets had been tried for decades with sub-threshold effect sizes. The stories worked because viewers transported into the speakers’ lives long enough to update their belief about whether smoking would happen to them too. The CDC paper Yu-kai cites in workshops is McAfee et al. 2013 in The Lancet.
Brand Storytelling
The Patagonia “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign is brand storytelling that worked specifically by transporting the reader into a moral universe where the brand’s environmental commitment was lived rather than asserted. The headline made no claim that could be argued with. The body copy walked the reader through the supply chain of one jacket with specific factories named, specific water consumption numbers given, specific repair-shop addresses listed. Patagonia revenue grew nearly 30% in the following year. The standard claim-based environmental advertising in the same period produced no comparable lift for competitors. The mechanism was transportation, not argument.
Political Persuasion
Deep-canvassing techniques developed by the Leadership LAB in 2015 use narrative transportation in a one-on-one conversational setting. The canvasser asks the voter to tell a personal story about a moment when they felt unjustly treated, and then asks them to imagine, in detail, how a member of a stigmatized group would have experienced the same moment. The published results in Science (Broockman and Kalla, 2016) showed durable reductions in transphobic attitudes that lasted at least three months. The mechanism was the transportation the voter did themselves into the other person’s experience, not the canvasser’s arguments. The same canvassing protocol with the imagery-construction step removed produced no effect.
Game Narratives
The reason story-driven games like The Last of Us, Disco Elysium, and Undertale produce belief shifts in their players that survive long past the credit roll is that interactive narratives produce maximally deep transportation. The player isn’t watching a character make a choice. The player is making the choice, with the character’s available information and emotional state. Imagery isn’t an inference from the prose; it is rendered by the engine. Identification isn’t an option; it is structural. The behavioral effects are correspondingly stronger and longer-lasting than passive media. Greitemeyer and Mügge’s 2014 meta-analytic review in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin aggregated dozens of experimental studies and showed that prosocial video games reliably increase prosocial outcomes (helping, cooperation, empathy) with small-to-medium effect sizes, the opposite-direction mirror of violent games’ effect on aggression. Interactive narrative does not just transport more deeply; the residual behavioral shift it leaves is measurable in controlled trials.
The Elephant in the Room
Most behavioral designers reach for narrative transportation because it works, and avoid the part of the literature that explains why the working is also the warning. The same mechanism that disables counter-arguing for a public-health campaign about smoking disables counter-arguing for a propaganda story about a stigmatized minority. The same imagery-driven belief drift that powers a deep-canvassing intervention against prejudice powers a radicalization pipeline that runs on personalized story content. The brain doesn’t tell the two apart. Inside the dlPFC, the offline state is identical.
That is the part of the conversation the field mostly refuses to have. A designer can claim, accurately, that they intend their narrative campaign to advance reader welfare. They cannot claim, accurately, that the mechanism they are using cares about their intent. The mechanism is a craft, not a moral compass. Whether the craft serves the reader depends entirely on whether the belief the story plants survives systematic review when transportation wears off and the reader’s dlPFC comes back online.
The publicity test that Libertarian Paternalism imported from John Rawls applies here with extra force. Would you, as a designer, be comfortable telling your reader the exact mechanism by which their belief about your subject shifted while they were reading? Would you be comfortable telling them, before the story, that what they are about to read is engineered to disable their counter-arguing capacity for the duration of the exposure? If the answer is no, you are exploiting transportation rather than honestly using it. The line is bright and it is mostly ignored.
How to Apply Narrative Transportation with the Octalysis Framework
The Octalysis Framework’s contribution to the Narrative Transportation literature is that it gives a per-Core-Drive design grammar for what each drive contributes to (or sabotages from) a story’s transportation potential. Transportation is the carrier wave; the eight Core Drives are the modulations the designer composes on top of it. Each Core Drive plays a specific role.
Core Drive 1 (CD1): Epic Meaning & Calling = THE PROTAGONIST’S WHY ENGINE
CD1 supplies the moral stake the protagonist is fighting for, the reason the reader’s emotional simulation is worth running. Stories without a CD1 stake can still transport on prose craft alone, but they don’t shift world-level beliefs. The CD1 stake is what gives the post-transportation residue a direction. The protagonist’s why becomes the reader’s revised belief about what is worth caring about, because for the duration of the transportation the reader experienced the why from the inside. Apollo Neuro’s brand stories about Dr. Dave Rabin’s research mission, every Pixar film’s central moral question, the Hero’s Journey itself, all run on CD1 as the load-bearing drive. Without it, transportation is entertainment. With it, transportation is meaning-making.
Core Drive 2 (CD2): Development & Accomplishment = THE STAKES-ESCALATION ENGINE
CD2 supplies the protagonist’s competence arc, the visible progress that gives the reader something to root for. The reader’s transportation deepens as the protagonist’s competence visibly grows, because tracking competence growth is what the human cognitive system is built to do (we are social-status calibration machines). Every Bildungsroman, every training montage, every onboarding flow disguised as a narrative, recruits CD2 to deepen transportation. The design move: visible micro-wins early, escalating stakes mid-arc, an asymptote the reader believes the protagonist can hit. Skip CD2 and the story becomes flat narration the reader observes from outside; engineer CD2 well and the reader leans in, transports deeper, and updates their belief about what they themselves can accomplish.
Core Drive 3 (CD3): Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback = THE READER-INTERIORITY ENGINE
CD3 lives in the negative space the story leaves for the reader’s imagination to fill. The Transportation-Imagery Model’s central claim is that the reader does the imagery work. The story supplies the constraints; the reader supplies the rendering. Stories that over-specify (filmic prose, fully described faces, exact-color skies) under-recruit CD3 and produce shallower transportation. Stories that supply specific sensory detail in service of leaving the larger picture to the reader recruit CD3 hard and produce deeper transportation. Hemingway’s iceberg principle is a CD3-design rule restated in literary craft language. For interactive narrative (games, second-person prose, branching media), CD3 also includes the reader’s agency over plot, which compounds with imagery agency to produce the deepest transportation states in the literature.
Core Drive 4 (CD4): Ownership & Possession = THE CHARACTER-IDENTIFICATION ENGINE
CD4 is what makes the protagonist feel like the reader’s protagonist, not a stranger they are observing. The endowment effect (Kahneman, Knetsch, Thaler) gives extra weight to anything the brain has tagged as “mine.” Identification is endowment applied to a character: once the reader has invested cognitive and emotional resources in inhabiting the protagonist’s interiority, the protagonist becomes mine in a way that strangers cannot. The downstream consequence is that what happens to the protagonist matters in the same way that what happens to me matters. The design move: give the reader something to invest in early (a hope, a fear, a small intimacy), and the CD4 endowment runs for the rest of the narrative. Skip the early investment and the reader observes; deliver it and the reader merges.
Core Drive 5 (CD5): Social Influence & Relatedness = THE SHARED-WORLD ENGINE
CD5 supplies the social substrate the story is unfolding within. Transported readers report not just inhabiting the protagonist’s perspective but inhabiting the protagonist’s social world: their relationships, their reputation, their tribe. The CD5 layer is what makes a story’s social facts feel like the reader’s social facts after transportation. This is the mechanism by which fiction shifts attitudes toward stigmatized groups (the deep-canvassing case): the reader spends time in a social world where the stigmatized group is treated as fully human, and the residue of that inhabitation leaks into their post-transportation beliefs about the actual world. Loose plotting, sprawling timelines, and resolved stakes early all bleed CD6 and shallow the transportation. The design move: every scene should contain a stake the reader is unsure will be met. When you can’t generate one, end the scene.
Core Drive 7 (CD7): Unpredictability & Curiosity = THE FORWARD-MOTION ENGINE
CD7 is the prediction-error reward that keeps the reader turning pages. The brain’s dopaminergic prediction-error system fires positively when the next moment of the story is neither fully predicted nor random. Stories that telegraph their resolution kill CD7 and lose transportation early. Stories that violate causal logic also kill CD7, in the opposite direction, by signaling that the prediction machinery shouldn’t bother. The sweet spot is what J.J. Abrams calls the mystery box: a question the reader is genuinely uncertain about whose answer, when delivered, fits in retrospect. Core Drive 8 (CD8): Loss & Avoidance = THE CONSEQUENCE-WEIGHT ENGINE

Loss aversion (the empirical finding that losses are weighted roughly twice as heavily as equivalent gains) makes CD8 the highest-leverage of the eight Core Drives for narrative tension. Stories with high CD8 stakes (the family will die, the legacy will be erased, the protagonist will lose their integrity) drive deeper transportation than stories with high CD2 stakes alone (the protagonist will win the trophy). The design move: every protagonist needs something to lose that the reader can viscerally feel the value of, established before the threat materializes. CD8 also carries the highest ethical risk of the eight, because manufactured loss frames are the easiest manipulative tool to deploy and the hardest for the reader to detect during transportation. Use sparingly, with publicity-test discipline.
The Six-Step Transportation x Octalysis Audit
The per-Core-Drive map is the theory. The audit is the planning instrument that turns the theory into design moves a working team can ship.
- Specify the post-transportation belief change at sentence-level resolution. Not “the reader feels good about the brand,” but “the reader believes our supply chain is more transparent than the industry norm.” The audit cannot evaluate a fuzzy target.
- Identify the dominant Core Drive the story will recruit. One drive is usually load-bearing (CD1 for mission stories, CD8 for cautionary tales, CD2 for capability narratives). Naming it explicitly forces the design to commit.
- Design the imagery-density curve. Specific sensory detail in scenes that need transportation; lower density in scenes that need cognitive distance. A flat imagery curve produces flat transportation. A deliberate curve produces a designed reader experience.
- Build the social world with the same care as the physical world. CD5 carries the persuasive payload, not the backdrop. Name relationships, give them texture, show power and reputation operating.
- Engineer one unresolved question per scene. CD7 budget is what sustains transportation across scene breaks. Without it, transportation collapses at every transition and never recovers.
- Run the publicity test in writing before shipping. - Run the Transportation Scale on your last three brand stories. Use the 15-item self-report version with 25 readers per story. Score each on the three subscales (cognitive attention, emotional engagement, mental imagery). The story that scored highest is the template; the others are calibration data. Most teams have never measured this.
- Audit imagery density in your last campaign. Count concrete sensory nouns and verbs per 100 words. The number for transported prose is typically 8-15; for brochure prose, 2-5. If your campaign is sub-5 and you wanted it to persuade, that is your bottleneck.
- Add one specific sensory detail per scene in your next draft. Not three, not five, one. Pick the smell, the texture, the sound that the protagonist would most plausibly notice in that moment. Specificity beats density; one well-chosen detail recruits imagery harder than five generic ones.
- Replace one statistic with one character story in your next deck or campaign. The statistic does not get removed; it becomes the closing argument the character story has earned the right to deliver. Stories without statistics drift toward sentimentality. Statistics without stories fail to transport.
- Run the publicity test on the belief your story is planting. Write the sentence aloud. If you wouldn’t read it to your reader, redesign the story until you would. This is the highest-commitment step on the list. It is also the one that separates ethical narrative design from manipulation that happens to wear a story’s clothes.
Narrative Transportation Was the Beginning, Not the End
Green and Brock’s 2000 paper sits in a specific place in the Behavioral Framework Library: it is the bridge from individual cognition to designed persuasive experience. Theories before it (Elaboration Likelihood Model, Heuristic-Systematic Model, Cognitive Dissonance) explain how a single reader processes a single argument in a single moment. Transportation explains how a designed artifact (a story) can produce belief change that survives the processing of any single argument because the argument was never the thing doing the work.
The frontier the construct opens is the design of interactive narratives, which compound transportation with agency in ways the original 2000 paper had no language for.
