In the winter of 1927, a 32-year-old man stood at the edge of Lake Michigan and seriously considered walking in. His building company had collapsed. He was broke, drinking, and still carrying the grief of a young daughter who had died a few years earlier. By his own later account, he had decided his family would be better off with the insurance money than with him.

He didn’t walk in. What he did instead is one of the strangest career decisions in the twentieth century: he resolved to treat his own remaining life as a single, deliberate experiment. The question the experiment would test was whether one penniless, unknown individual could do something real on behalf of all of humanity.

He even gave the subject a code name. He started referring to himself in his own records as “Guinea Pig B,” the lab animal in an experiment of one. Over the next 56 years that experiment produced the geodesic dome, the phrase “Spaceship Earth,” a U.S. presidential medal, and eventually a class of carbon molecules that scientists named after him.

Read his life the way you would read a character sheet in a life-as-a-game framework (Game, Attributes, Role, Skills, Allies, Quests) and the leap from the lake to the legend stops looking like luck. It turns into a build you can study, and in a few places, copy.

I keep coming back to Fuller because he is the only famous person I know who literally adopted the premise of this framework as his life plan. He decided to run himself as an experiment to see what one individual could do, and then documented the run for 56 years. Most of us never make that decision consciously. If you steal one move from his sheet, steal the reframe he made at the lake: your worst failure can be repurposed as the start of the experiment, the moment you stop playing to not lose and start playing to find out what you’re actually capable of.

Step 1: The Game Buckminster Fuller Was Actually Playing

File Fuller under “the geodesic dome guy” and you miss the whole game.

The dome was an output. The game was a question he posed to himself at the lake in 1927 and never put down: can one human being, with no money and no mandate, make the world work for everyone? He called the discipline he invented to answer it “design science” — rigorous, whole-systems engineering aimed not at profit but at making scarce resources stretch far enough for all of humanity.

The central mechanic had a name he built himself: ephemeralization, his word for the discipline of doing ever more with ever less. A lighter, stronger structure. A house that weighs a fraction of a normal one. A map that distorts less. To Fuller, every design was a move in a planetary-scale resource game, and he eventually turned that idea literal by creating the “World Game,” a simulation in which players tried to reallocate the planet’s resources to eliminate war and starvation.

This is the part of turning your life into a game you play on purpose that most people skip: the legendary builds are chasing a mission, not a job title. Fuller wasn’t trying to become an architect, an engineer, or an author. He was trying to win one specific, absurd, lifelong game, and the inventions, books, and patents fell out of that pursuit as side effects.

Step 2: Attributes, the Innate Stats

Some of Fuller’s edge was visible long before any of it paid off. These are his Attributes: the stats he rolled at the start that no amount of study installs in a person.

The first was structural vision. Fuller was born with severe farsightedness and didn’t get corrective glasses until he was around four years old. For his earliest years he saw the world as blurred patterns of color and shape rather than sharp objects, and he later credited this with training him to think in terms of structure and relationships, the geometry under the surface, instead of individual things. The dice that looked like a disability became his rarest stat.

The second was radical nonconformity. He was expelled from Harvard not once but twice, the second time for what the record bluntly calls irresponsibility. A more cautious person folds that into shame and conforms. Fuller did the opposite, drifting through manual jobs and the Navy and eventually choosing a career path that didn’t exist yet rather than the safe one that did.

The third was a compulsion to make and name. He didn’t just invent objects, he invented vocabulary: Spaceship Earth, Dymaxion, synergetics, tensegrity. Knowing which stats you actually rolled high in is the entire point of the Talent Triangle Method: you build your character around your real strengths instead of the ones the world says you should have. Fuller built around pattern-vision, stubbornness, and naming, and never once tried to be a conventional credentialed professional.

Step 3: Roles Across the Chapters

Fuller never held one class for long. He re-spec’d again and again while protecting the same core game, which is how one person ends up with a résumé this strange.

He started as a sailor and naval engineer, serving in the U.S. Navy during the First World War, where he got hands-on with shipboard machinery, communications, and logistics. He leveled into an entrepreneurial builder in the early 1920s, running the Stockade Building System, a company experimenting with modular housing blocks. That class ended in bankruptcy by 1927.

After the lake, he respec’d hardest of all: into an independent inventor and “design scientist” with no employer, living frugally and treating prototypes as proof-of-concept arguments for a better world. From there he became a futurist designer (the Dymaxion years), then an architect-engineer famous for the geodesic dome, and finally a globe-trotting professor and systems philosopher who held a post at Southern Illinois University. That willingness to keep switching class while guarding one mission is something he shares with another relentless polymath, Leonardo da Vinci, who also refused to be only one kind of maker.

Step 4: The Real-Life Game Skills He Mastered

Attributes opened the door. Skills are what he did once he was through it, and the canon Real-Life Game Skills map cleanly onto his run.

The foundation was Phoenix Rebirth (Paladin): recovering from a devastating failure and coming back stronger. The entire post-1927 career is one long execution of this skill. A bankrupt, grieving 32-year-old chose to convert the rock bottom itself into fuel, and that conversion, not the domes, is the actual source of everything that followed.

On top of it ran Devour (Warlock): stripping steps, weight, and material out of a thing until it becomes lean. This is ephemeralization stated as a skill. Fuller obsessively asked how much performance he could get from how little stuff, which is exactly how a triangulated dome ends up enclosing more space per pound of material than any wall-and-beam building.

He paired it with Foresight (Ranger), the ability to project trends and design for a future that isn’t here yet. Coining “Spaceship Earth” in the 1960s, decades before climate and resource limits were mainstream, is Foresight in its purest form: he was engineering for problems most people couldn’t see coming. The same trait shows up in another inventor who lived years ahead of his market, Nikola Tesla.

Underneath the breakthroughs sat Telekinesis (Mage), the knack for visualizing physical forces and structures in the head before they exist. Fuller could feel how tension and compression would distribute across a frame, which is how he and his collaborators arrived at geodesic geometry and the tensegrity structures that hold themselves up through balanced tension.

Then there are the two skills that prove how seriously he took the “experiment of one.” Lich Pact (Warlock) is the polyphasic sleep schedule, and Fuller actually ran one, a regime of short naps spaced through the day that he called Dymaxion sleep, treating his own body as part of the lab. And Thunder Clap (Paladin), public speaking that charges a room, became his distribution engine: he was famous for marathon thinking-out-loud lectures that ran for hours and converted audiences into believers.

Step 5: Allies Who Multiplied Him

No one runs a 56-year experiment alone. Fuller’s saga is full of allies who each unlocked something he couldn’t reach by himself.

The first was his wife, Anne Hewlett Fuller. She stayed with him through the bankruptcy, the grief, and the years of unpaid experimentation, and she is consistently identified as the steady partner across the entire long run. Without that anchor, the man at the lake in 1927 may not have had a reason to climb back out.

The multipliers on the work itself came later. Kenneth Snelson, a young artist Fuller met as a student, built the floating-compression sculptures that crystallized the idea of tensegrity that became central to Fuller’s structural language. Shoji Sadao became a long-term design and architecture collaborator who helped realize Fuller’s domes and map projects, and figures like Isamu Noguchi and John McHale worked within his orbit to carry the ideas into art, design, and media. The lesson is one the 10K HP framework states plainly: the right ally doesn’t add to your build, they multiply it. Fuller supplied the vision; allies like Snelson and Sadao turned the vision into objects that could stand up.

Step 6: Quests That Shaped the Saga

Strip the life to its defining quests and the shape of the run becomes obvious, including the failure that sits right at the hinge.

The first quest was the one that broke him: the Stockade Building System, his modular-housing venture of the early 1920s, which collapsed into the 1927 bankruptcy that nearly ended his life. Out of that low point came the Dymaxion line, his linked series of more-with-less prototypes. The Dymaxion House aimed at a mass-producible, lightweight dwelling, and a later prototype, the Wichita House, was actually built in 1945. The three-wheeled Dymaxion Car arrived in 1933 and drew crowds, until a fatal crash near the Chicago World’s Fair that year spooked investors and effectively killed the project. The setback was real, and so was the lesson he kept taking from setbacks: log it, learn from it, keep moving.

The wins compounded from there. His Dymaxion Map was promoted in Life magazine in 1943. The geodesic dome earned a U.S. patent in 1954 and reached a global audience when his Biosphere dome went up for Expo 67 in Montreal. His 1968 book Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth turned the mission into a manifesto, and the Dymaxion Chronofile, his obsessive 1920–1983 record of his own life, made the whole experiment auditable. The honors landed late: the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983, the year he died. Two years later, chemists named a newly discovered carbon molecule buckminsterfullerene, the “buckyball,” because its structure echoed his domes. You can trace the same arc across the other OP Hero profiles: the legendary runs are almost always the ones where the worst setback became the doorway to the next chapter.

What You Can Steal From Fuller’s Build

You will never roll Fuller’s exact stats, and you don’t need to. The transferable parts aren’t the gifts. They’re the moves.

Make the reframe he made at the lake. When a venture collapses, the cheap response is shame and a smaller life. The Fuller move is to treat the wreckage as the official start of an experiment: what can this version of me, who has nothing left to protect, actually find out? That same refusal to let a failure be the final word connects him to another inventor who turned thousands of dead ends into a method, Thomas Edison.

Then run his two quiet disciplines. Practice ephemeralization on your own projects by asking what you can remove rather than what you can add, because doing more with less is a skill that compounds. And document your run the way he kept the Chronofile, so that future-you can audit past-you instead of guessing. That is the OP Hero pattern one more time: the build that goes legendary is rarely the one that started with the best hand. It’s the one that turned a lakeside low point into the first entry of a 56-year experiment, and then kept the log.
