There’s a story being told about you right now that I think is the single most destructive narrative in the modern self-help canon.
The story goes like this: Big Tech has weaponized your dopamine. Their product teams sit in a war room and design your phone to pick the lock on your prefrontal cortex. You are not a person using an app. You are a brain being hijacked. And the moral of the story. The one The Social Dilemma closes on, the one the dopamine-detox articles keep reprinting, is that the solution lives somewhere outside of you. In better regulation, in a flip phone, or in a digital detox retreat run by the same op-ed writers who said the same thing about Nintendo in the nineties.
I spent a long evening on a X Space (formerly Twitter Spaces) with Nir Eyal. The guy who literally wrote Hooked, the book everyone blames for teaching Silicon Valley how to build compulsion, and he said something that has rattled around in my head for years: “Hijacking is what they did to us on 9/11. Hijacking is not playing Candy Crush. Get a grip.”
That line cuts deep for a reason. The brain-hijacking story isn’t just wrong. It’s the kind of wrong that makes you worse. It’s the kind of wrong that removes your agency on the exact axis where agency is the only thing that ever fixes the problem. In this post, I want to pull the narrative apart, show you why it’s doing real damage, and give you the frame that actually works. The one I’ve been teaching for fifteen years through the Octalysis Framework.

Why the Story You Believe About Tech Changes What You Do About It
Before I take the hijacking narrative apart, I want to show you the actual stakes, because they’re higher than they look.
Two people open Instagram at midnight. Both scroll longer than they meant to. Same behavior. Now watch what happens as they interpret it.
Person A tells themselves: “Instagram is hijacking my brain. The algorithm is weaponized. I can’t help it.” What happens next? Nothing. Because the story they’ve accepted explicitly says nothing can happen. The problem is external, industrial, out of reach. Tomorrow night they scroll again, and the scroll is now evidence. See? Hijacked. The narrative self-confirms on a loop, and every repetition is a small vote for helplessness.
Person B tells themselves: “I’m scrolling because my phone is on the nightstand and I’m a little anxious and this is the easiest thing in arm’s reach. That’s a design I can change.” What happens next? The phone moves to the other room. A book replaces it on the nightstand. The scroll doesn’t vanish overnight, but the setup that made it inevitable is gone.
Same person, same behavior, two narratives. One of them produces action. The other produces a TED-talk-length explanation of why action is impossible. If you doubt this effect is real, the learned-helplessness literature has been documenting it for sixty years.
So when people say “but the hijacking narrative is how we hold tech companies accountable”, I understand the instinct. I just don’t think it’s true. You can hold companies accountable without handing your readers a frame that paralyzes them. We’ll get to what that looks like.
Pillar One: Hijacking Is a Violence Metaphor. Stop Using It for Candy Crush.
Nir’s blunt line is worth reading twice: “Tristan Harris said the technology companies are hijacking our brains. Ridiculous. Hijacking is what they did to us on 9/11. Hijacking is not playing Candy Crush. Get a grip.”
Read the word “hijacking” literally for a second. It means seizure of a vehicle by force, against the will of the people inside, with no consent and no means of exit. Every single one of those conditions is load-bearing. Consent is the thing that matters. Coercion is the thing that matters. The term exists precisely to name events where agency has been violently stripped away.
Now apply it to a teenager opening TikTok. None of the conditions hold. She downloaded the app. She unlocked the phone herself. Three taps uninstalls it. A drawer makes it invisible. Notifications are a toggle. Compare that list to what the passengers on Flight 93 could do about their situation, and tell me with a straight face these two things belong under the same word.
This isn’t nitpicking. When you apply violence-level language to voluntary behavior, two ugly things happen at once. You trivialize actual violence, which is an entire separate essay about why careful language about harm matters for the people who’ve experienced real harm. And you remove agency from people who still have it, because the word’s implicit conclusion is you can’t do anything about this.
The alternative isn’t “tech is fine.” The alternative is precise language. Engagement design is real. Some engagement design crosses ethical lines into what my framework calls Black Hat gamification, using Scarcity, Unpredictability, and Loss & Avoidance to extract behavior that doesn’t leave the user better off. That’s worth naming and criticizing. But it’s not hijacking. It’s more like an aggressive casino floor plan. You can describe the casino floor plan honestly, and propose regulation of the actually harmful elements, without telling the people walking in that they’ve been kidnapped.
Pillar Two: The Dopamine Panic Is Scientifically Illiterate
Nir’s second pillar is the one that makes neuroscientists wince when the dopamine-detox industry fires up again: “Any time you hear somebody say ‘dopamine spike this, dopamine spike that,’ you instantly know they don’t know what they’re talking about. You get dopamine when you study for a test, learn piano, give someone a hug.”
Popular writing treats dopamine like a small dose of digital heroin, a pleasure chemical that evil designers inject into your brain through your feed. That picture is wrong on both ends. Dopamine isn’t a pleasure chemical. It’s a learning and anticipation signal, a flag that fires when your brain is trying to predict what’s valuable and calibrate toward it. It fires during anything novel or goal-directed, which is why you get a dopamine response from finishing a hard chapter of a textbook, from a hug, from getting better at a piano piece, from a child’s smile, from a new song, and yes, from a notification ping.
Let that sink in for a second, because it destroys the whole framing. If “this activity produces dopamine” is the test for what’s bad for you, then studying is bad for you. Exercise is bad for you. Falling in love is bad for you. Everything you’d want your kid to do releases dopamine. The chemical isn’t the problem. The activity is.
The useful question isn’t does this spike dopamine? The useful question is does this leave me better off after I engage with it? A TikTok scroll and a piano practice session both light up the same circuit. One produces a skill, a body of work, a life. The other produces an hour you don’t remember. The chemistry is identical. The outcome is the entire point.
This is the same distinction I’ve written about as White Hat vs. Black Hat gamification. Two products can activate identical Core Drives. One leaves the user stronger. The other leaves the user drained. Mechanics aren’t the verdict. The outcome is. The dopamine-panic framing collapses that distinction, which is why it produces bad advice on repeat.
Pillar Three: The Anti-Tech Crusade Is a Media War, Not a Consumer Protection Campaign
This one is awkward to say out loud, but you need it on the table to see the full picture. Here’s Nir: “The Social Dilemma, a movie telling you how terrible technology is, put out by Netflix. Come on.”
Notice who’s producing the anti-tech content. Legacy media outlets, newspapers, network TV, film studios, a handful of old streaming giants, lost the last two decades of attention to open-platform social media. They didn’t lose it because people got tricked. They lost it because the new platforms let anyone publish and let audiences choose what to consume, and that democratization ate the old gatekeeper model for lunch.
Now ask yourself: when legacy media tells you the new platforms are evil, who benefits from you believing it? This answer isn’t complicated. Outlets that lost your attention want it back. The easiest way to get it back is to convince you that the thing that replaced them is poisoning you. That’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s the basic structure of every dominant-player-attacked-by-insurgent fight in industrial history. Horse carriage makers hated cars. Record labels hated Napster. Taxi commissions hated Uber. In each case the incumbents wrapped their fight in a public-interest story because “please stop eating my lunch” is a bad slogan.
I am not saying every criticism of social media is corporate self-interest in disguise. There are real designers sounding real alarms. What I am saying is that when you see a Netflix-produced documentary framing all of social media as a mind-control machine, you should notice the frame around the frame. The emperor’s own film studio is telling you the emperor’s rivals are evil. Take it with the appropriate grain of salt.
The Octalysis Frame: CD8 Helplessness vs. CD3 Empowerment
This is where I want to ground the conversation in the framework I’ve spent fifteen years building, because it explains why the victim narrative doesn’t work at the level of motivation, not just philosophy.
The Octalysis Framework maps all human motivation to eight Core Drives. Two of them are especially relevant here:


Core Drive 8, Loss & Avoidance is the motivation of fear, anxiety, and helplessness. It’s triggered by language that says something bad is about to happen to you, and you can’t stop it. As a short-term motivator, CD8 is potent. It’s great for triggering immediate reactive behavior. But it’s a terrible long-term motivator. Sustained CD8 activation produces burnout, avoidance, and paralysis. It’s the Core Drive of the brain in headlights.
Core Drive 3, Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback is the gamer’s mindset. It’s triggered by language that says here’s a puzzle, here are some tools, here’s what happens when you experiment. CD3 is what drives players to spend four hundred hours beating a single Zelda dungeon that’s optional. It’s the Core Drive of someone who believes the situation has a solution they can find.
Now map the two narratives onto those Core Drives.
“Big tech is hijacking your brain, the algorithm is weaponized, you have no defense” activates CD8 from top to bottom. It produces the anxiety pose, shoulders up, breath shallow, the instinct to close the tab and do nothing different because nothing different would help. That’s not a character flaw. That’s what CD8 does to people when it’s the only drive in the room.
“You’re scrolling because your phone is on your nightstand and your environment made it too easy, let’s redesign the environment” activates CD3. It reframes the scroll as a level to beat, not a cage to escape. And the difference isn’t motivational in a fluffy sense. It’s neurological. CD3 brains write down ideas, test them, iterate. CD8 brains scroll more, because scrolling is the cheapest available soothing behavior for the anxiety the narrative just produced.
The victim narrative doesn’t just misdescribe the situation. It causes the wrong motivational state to work on it. That’s a design flaw in the discourse, and it’s why I push so hard on the agency reframe. Agency isn’t a moralistic demand to “try harder.” Agency is the precondition for the Core Drive that actually solves the problem.
The Gamer’s Mindset: Your Phone Is a Level, Not a Captor
Here’s a mental model I give every client who’s struggling with “technology addiction” in their own life or in their user base. Imagine the same person in two different stances.
In stance one, the person is playing a game. The boss is hard. The environment is set up to punish them. The timing is tight. Does she complain the game is unfair? Does she write an essay about how the level designer hijacked her reflexes? Of course not. She tries different loadouts. They watch someone else’s clear on YouTube. They redesign their approach. The difficulty is the point. It’s the thing making the win feel earned. Landscape as information — not as captivity.
Stance two: same person, now lying in bed scrolling. The feed is tuned. The dopamine is spiking. The notifications are chirping. Suddenly they’re a victim of the design. There’s no strategy to try. The landscape has become a cage.
It’s the same person. It’s the same kind of landscape, a designed environment tuned to extract specific behavior. The only thing that’s changed is the stance.
The gamer’s mindset is the first gift I try to give people when they’re trying to reshape their relationship with technology. You are not being kidnapped by your feed. You are playing a level that was designed with hard tuning. That’s useful! That’s solvable! The designers did you a favor by being good at their jobs, it means that when you change the environment, the new environment will be just as effective at the new behavior. You’re not fighting the tuning. You’re redirecting it.
The 3-5% Exception: Genuine Addiction Deserves Genuine Protection
I need to be careful here, because there’s a reading of this argument that says “addiction isn’t real, just try harder.” That reading is wrong, and both Nir and I are explicit about it.
Pathological addiction is real. It affects somewhere between three and five percent of the population for any given compulsive behavior, gambling, alcohol, substances, and yes, certain forms of compulsive tech use. For that population, the brain chemistry is actually different, the executive function is measurably impaired, and willpower is not the relevant variable. Those people need clinical support, structural protection, and in many cases platform-level interventions.
Nir has argued, and I agree, that tech companies should be legally obligated to provide affordance tools for the clinically addicted population, time limits, usage summaries, hard stops, and clinical-referral pathways for the users whose behavior patterns match pathological criteria. That’s a real policy position, and it’s a good one.
But policy designed for the 5% should not define the narrative for the 95%. When you flatten the entire population into “everyone’s brain is being hijacked,” you do two kinds of damage at once. You trivialize the clinical five percent by making “addicted” a word that means everyone, which means it no longer marks what they’re actually going through. And you strip the ninety-five percent of the one variable that actually works at their level, agency. The mature position isn’t “addiction is a myth” or “everyone is addicted.” The mature position is stratify the population, name the phenomenon at the right level for each stratum, and design interventions per stratum. That’s how every other public health conversation handles gradient phenomena. Tech should get the same treatment.
The Plan-Ahead Principle: Environmental Design Beats Willpower Every Time
This is the practical core of the Anti-Victimization Thesis, and it’s the part I’ve been teaching for years as Lifestyle Inertia Design.
Nir’s operating principle is almost embarrassingly simple: “If you sleep next to your cell phone, of course it’s the first thing you reach for. Don’t sleep next to your cell phone.” “If you wait till the cigarette is in your hand, you’re going to smoke it.” And: “As long as you plan ahead, there is no distraction we can’t overcome.“
The insight under these one-liners is the thing that separates people who change their behavior from people who just feel bad about it: willpower is a loser’s bet in the moment, but it’s a winner’s bet six hours in advance.
At 11:30 at night, you will not successfully resist the scroll. Your prefrontal cortex is tired, your blood sugar is wherever it is, the phone is glowing six inches from your hand, and every small piece of the setup is tuned to make the easiest next action the scrolling action. Trying to out-willpower that moment is a strategy that fails on the same schedule as trying to out-willpower gravity. Nobody has ever written a motivational book that reliably works at 11:30 PM when the phone is on the nightstand.
But at 4 PM, choosing to leave your phone charging in the kitchen tonight is an almost trivial decision. There’s no temptation at 4 PM. Your prefrontal cortex is operating. You can even make it automatic, “the charger lives in the kitchen, full stop”, and now the behavior you want is the default behavior of the environment.
This is what “environmental design” means as a phrase. You stop fighting the slope of your own behavior. You re-terrain the landscape so the slope runs the right direction. Willpower isn’t a personality trait you’re born with. It’s a resource you allocate, and the smartest allocation is to spend it once, on setting up the environment, instead of continuously on white-knuckling the moment.
Every serious behavior-change technique I’ve deployed with clients, from Fortune 500 training programs to personal productivity systems, uses some version of this principle. You don’t raise the ceiling of your self-control. You lower the floor of what self-control has to fight.
One more thing the dopamine-detox industry gets backwards: the goal isn’t to strip stimulation out of your day. It’s to redirect it. The reason cold-turkey detoxes so often produce a relapse two weeks later is that you’ve left a dopamine vacuum without filling it. Your pursuit system is still tuned to expect anticipation and variable feedback, and the only thing in your environment that delivers that consistently is the app you just deleted. The Octalysis-aware version of the prescription isn’t “remove the scroll.” It’s switch the scroll for a domain that delivers the same Core Drive activation through a White Hat channel. Trade the late-night scroll for a Strava segment, a Duolingo streak, a learning track that gives you ranked feedback. The pursuit engine doesn’t need to be killed. It needs to be aimed at something that leaves you better off.
Kierkegaard’s Frame: Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom
Nir invoked a Kierkegaard line that I think is the philosophical keystone of the whole conversation: “Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.”
Modern life gives you an obscene number of choices. What to do with this hour. What to watch. What to buy. What to believe. Which career to pick. Which of the ten thousand videos to watch next. Each choice carries a little load of “is this the right one” anxiety. Multiply that by every hour of every day, and you get the ambient hum of modern discomfort that people then blame on Instagram.
The hijacking narrative responds to that anxiety by trying to remove the choice. Tech bans. Digital detoxes. Dumb phones. The implicit theory is that freedom itself is the problem and reducing freedom is the cure.
Kierkegaard’s counter, echoed by Nir and by me: the choice isn’t the problem. What’s underdeveloped is the skill of choosing well. We have more options than any generation in human history and we haven’t trained any of the mental muscles that let people live comfortably inside that abundance. The dizziness of freedom is a feature, not a bug; it’s what choosing well feels like before you’ve learned to do it well. The cure isn’t to collapse the menu. The cure is to grow the chooser.
That’s why the whole frame of “protect people from too much tech” is upside down. What people actually need, and what design, education, and parenting should be pointing at, is the skill of how to live with abundance. That’s a much harder problem than “put a lock on the app,” which is why people keep reaching for the lock. But the lock doesn’t teach anyone anything. The skill, once learned, scales to every other abundant-choice domain life will hand you.
What This Means If You Build Products (Or Use Them)
If you’re a designer, founder, or product person, the Anti-Victimization Thesis is a sharper operating principle than the hijacking discourse suggests, because it replaces “don’t manipulate users” with a better question: does this experience leave users more capable, or more drained?
A few rules I give my clients:
Design for agency, not for helplessness. If your product’s engagement model only works when users are in a CD8 state, anxious, depleted, reactive, you’ve built something that can’t survive a user who’s well-rested. That’s a fragile business. White Hat Core Drives (CD1 Epic Meaning, CD2 Development & Accomplishment, CD3 Empowerment) produce engagement that survives the user waking up in a good mood. That’s a durable business.
Environmental affordances beat willpower demands. If your product requires users to continually override their own impulses to get value out of it, it’s broken. Build affordances into the environment, default settings, sensible friction in the right places, affordance tools for the clinically compulsive, and you’ll retain users who would otherwise churn out of shame.
Distinguish engagement from exploitation in clear, testable ways. Engagement that increases user capability looks like Duolingo streaks that produce a language skill. Exploitation that extracts without giving back looks like slot-machine variable-reward loops that produce nothing a user would list on their resume. The mechanics are often similar. The outcome is the verdict. Test for the outcome.
Stop the dopamine test. Start the left-off-better test. “Does this trigger dopamine?” is a meaningless design question, because dopamine fires for everything good and everything bad. “Does the user leave better off for having engaged with us?” is the question that actually separates White Hat design from Black Hat. Ask the real question.
If you’re a user of products, which is everyone reading this. The operating principle is simpler. Refuse the victim narrative. Not because tech is innocent, but because the narrative strips you of the one lever that has ever changed your behavior. You are a designer of your own environment. You pick the slope. The slope runs you the rest of the way. That’s how behavior change actually works, and no op-ed about hijacking will ever close the gap between that truth and the feeling of helplessness the narrative keeps selling.
The Reframe That Puts You Back in the Driver’s Seat
Here’s the single sentence I’d want every reader to leave with:
You are not being kidnapped by your phone — you are inhabiting an environment that was tuned to produce specific behavior, and you can tune the environment back.
That sentence is the entire difference between a CD8 user and a CD3 user, between someone trapped by the hijacking narrative and someone operating with it. It’s the difference between an essay about why the world is broken and an evening when you moved the charger.
The Octalysis Framework, the behavioral design work, the entire last fifteen years of my career, none of it makes sense if you don’t believe people have agency over their own engagement. The Anti-Victimization Thesis isn’t a hot take. It’s the foundation the rest of the work sits on. Take the agency seriously, and everything else, environmental design, White Hat engagement, Lifestyle Inertia, the whole practical toolkit, becomes available to you.
Refuse the narrative that says you can’t. The narrative is wrong, and more importantly, the narrative is the thing in the way.
