New Design Challenge on OP

Octalysis Prime 🏝 is packed with Yu-kai’s knowledge on how to apply Gamification in all areas of life. And our users are often amazed at how deep the learning goes.

Yet, absorbing information about Human-Focused design will only get you so far. It requires practice to take your skills to the next level.

That is why we occasionally host a Design Challenge on Octalysis Prime!

Challenge – Make a VIDEO

This time around we challenge you to create a concise, finished deliverable. A one-minute-long video about one feature of Octalysis Prime,

This can be a recording of you speaking, screen-recorded footage from the Island, voice-over, animated or something very different. Use your creativity!

1) Choose one feature on the Island that you find engaging/interesting
2) Mention up to three Core Drives that are involved
3) Explain how it works and motivates to do Desired Actions

Participate in this friendly competition

This is a friendly competition. Share your progress, in the dedicated channel on our premium Slack community, to encourage and learn from each other!

The full details on this Design Challenge can be found in the Challenges area on the Island. Or directly here.

Good luck!

Make sure to submit your video(s) on or before the 23rd of October.

Octalysis Certificate Achiever: Adrian Ensner

If you were to imagine somebody with a passion for and dedication to Gamification, you would imagine Adrian.

Adrian is one of the very few who hold the highest rank (Black status) on Octalysis Prime. He is a valued member of the community, famous for his dad-jokes.

And he managed to obtain his Level 1 Octalysis Certificate without having to resubmit, no small feat!

Something unique about Adrian’s submission is that he analysed an experience he created himself!

Make sure to look at Adrian’s excellent Player Type analysis. It shows both a solid understanding of the eight Core Drives of Octalysis, as well as empathy towards his target audience.

Congratulations, Adrian. On to Level 2!

Wow! Thank you so much for this detailed feedback. I like the “think bigger” input. I had a feeling I could have gone further there.

Octalysis Certificate Achiever: Robert Sherman

We are very strict when reviewing submissions for the Octalysis Certificates. The bar we have set is high, even for the Level 1. This means that most people need one or two re-submissions before meeting all the criteria, if at all.

It also means that those who earned their certificate have really proven that they are worthy!

Robert is one of the few people who managed to obtain the Octalysis Level 1 Certificate with their first submission! Impressive.

Robert’s analysis of the weight-loss app Noom is steady on all fronts. He also took into consideration the experience of the reader.

By adding a progress bar on the slides, the reader gains more control over their experience (CD2) and is more likely to keep on reading.

Congratulations, Robert. Well done!

I am so excited to receive my Level 1 Certificate, and even more excited to take part in this amazing community.

Octalysis Certificate Achiever: Timothy Sher

On Octalysis Prime we have a Leveling System. Users start at Blue status level 1, after reaching level 10, they upgrade to Orange status level 1. And so on through Purple, Silver, Gold and finally Black status.

Reaching the highest status colour takes a lot of determination. So far, only a handful of Octalysis Primers have achieved this impressive milestone. Timothy is one of those people! Yet he is one of the humblest members we have.

For his Octalysis Level 1 Certificate, Timothy chose an experience that is close to his heart.

Timothy really nailed mapping out the Desired Actions. They are written as user actions, are listed in order of experience flow and support the Business Metrics well.

Congratulations, Timothy. Good job!

I would like to thank Peter who introduced Octalysis to me. I also appreciate the videos lessons on Octalysis Prime and the community on Slack.

Octalysis Certificate Achiever: Arturo Caudullo

Have you ever heard of the “Too Good To Go” app? If so, you will want to check out this submission for the Octalysis Level 1 Certificate. If not, you will want to check out this submission!

In this light-to-read presentation, Arturo thoroughly analyses the user journey of this experience, and offers suggestions for improvement.

Arturo diligently built out the Strategy Dashboard. He then effectively tied the conclusions from the different steps of the analysis phase to deliver a great brainstorming.

We especially like the “Proximity Bonus” which adds a sense of obligation to help the local stores, together with other users that live nearby. And the “Roulette Formula” that motivates to also visit other stores.

Congratulations, Arturo. Good work!

I’m so excited! It’s a great milestone for me, I’m so happy! Thanks for your precious feedback, I really appreciate it! Yeaaaah!

Octalysis Certificate Achiever: Predrag Stefanovic

Many people are motivated to grab a bite to eat at a fast-food restaurant. Working in this industry, on the other hand, can in many cases use some more Human-Focused Design.

In this submission for the Octalysis Level 1 Certificate, Predrag takes a close look at working for the restaurant chain Duff.

Predrag made sure to cover the Human-Focused Design aspect of this submission. He added many funny images that help to keep the reader’s motivational energy high.

Congratulations, Predrag. Well done!

Thanks a lot, Dirk, Myrte for the great news. I am very grateful and happy for this achievement.

Rodrigo put a lot of thought into defining the Business Metrics. This is a key foundational step in any gamification design. Pay attention to the details in the wording.

Congratulations, Rodrigo. Onwards to Level 2!

I’m very happy and would like to thank every one who dedicated time to read, to answer me and to give me very good and professional feedback without losing the humane part. Thank you very much!
